THE Met Office has issued a yellow warning to be aware of ice with bitterly cold weather set for St Helens through Friday and Saturday.
Persistent rain showers and icy winds have affected the borough today.
Forecasters say the outbreaks of rain will clear this evening and into the early hours of Saturday.
But temperatures will fall, causing icy stretches to form on untreated surfaces across northern and western Britain.
