Marie Rimmer confirms her aim to be St Helens' first woman MP

St Helens Star: Marie Rimmer Marie Rimmer

FORMER St Helens Council leader Marie Rimmer has today confirmed she will launch a bid to become Labour candidate for St Helens South and Whiston.

The Star reported a fortnight ago how Cllr Marie Rimmer was expected to throw her hat into the ring as a candidate to succeed former Northern Ireland Secretary, Shaun Woodward MP, when he stands down from Parliament at the next General Election.

Labour has confirmed its candidate will come from an all woman shortlist.

The Labour Party began a selection process for the St Helens South and Whiston seat after Mr Woodward, who has represented the constituency since 2001, announced in November last year that he would not be standing for election again.

Cllr Rimmer, 66, has more than 30 years to public service in St Helens.

Speaking ahead of the launch of her campaign Cllr Rimmer said: “I’m pleased to be announcing that I intend to seek selection to be the next Labour MP for St Helens South and Whiston.

"Representing my home town in Parliament would be a tremendous honour and I’m certain I am capable of doing the job and fighting for St Helens South & Whiston.

“I have been inundated with Labour members asking me to consider standing, it was an easy decision to make and I’m standing because I’m passionate about our Town.

"It’s my home, it’s where my family grew up, and I believe our best days are ahead of us.

“As the selection process moves ahead I am looking forward to campaigning to be selected.”

Labour has run this town into the ground. Very apt that someone with 30 years of experience digging is ready to pick up the shovel again....we can always go deeper.

At the end of the day the blame lies with the people of St. Helens they vote labour irrespective. You could put forward the biggest whomever you like as councillor or MP in most of the borough and as long as its labour they would be voted in. What happens is then is then a trade between a few talentless individuals to share the spoils being a lucrative job for life. The losers are the very people who vote them in. The stuck in a 70,s time warp Marie rimmer coming back as MP would have St. Helens as a laughing stock in the north west if it is not so already.

Barry surprisingly for you I agree. It's about time we could discuss immigration and references to Religious groups and ethnic minority groups without beng called a racist.

I think I have raised this point before when in the 50's we read notices outside hotels houses of "No Blacks, No Irish". Nothing changes with Romas now being the hated class, something that the history of the Jews are well aware and in some Middle Eastern eyes are still.

I digress Ukipp concentrates on immigration and Europe virtually a "double Issue" party. I note in some panic Farage is trying to portray his party as the "Nice" party getting rid of his "loonies" as some say and BNP hangers on. He realisers at an election time people will want to see more of what they are for and how to deal with the economy. NHS, business etc.

In the interest of balance its better than a right-wing facist state (no I have no communist sympathies but have had my phone tapped by special branch when someone who was a member-not now-used to ring me-the "click" was audible!).
You only need to worry when you see Marie's tanks rolling across the Marie Rimmer Piazza outside the Town hall. Then run for your life!

She certainly won't be getting my vote.
