A 28-YEAR-OLD driver was rescued by emergency services after his car ploughed into a tree in the early hours.

Firefighters were called shortly after 3am to the East Lancashire Road near to the junction with Blindfoot Road.

Crews used hydraulic cutting gear to remove the doors and then used specialist equipment to ease the mangled car away from the trapped driver, who was given painkillers intravenously by the paramedics on scene.

He was placed on a long board before being taken by ambulance to University Hospital Aintree.

A female passenger, aged in her mid 40s, was out of the vehicle when the fire service arrived.

She was also taken by ambulance to University Hospital Aintree.

Fire crews from Aintree Community Fire Station along with the Search and Rescue and Incident Management Team were involved in the operation.

Crews were on the scene for nearly two hours.
