POLICE have confirmed that a road has re-opened following an incident earlier this afternoon following the death of a pensioner.

Road closures on St Helens Linkway have been re-opened following reports that a silver Ford Zetec C had been in collision with a lorry.

It is believed that the 86-year-old driver of the car had been taken ill following the crash and was taken to Whiston Hospital but died a short time later.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call the Roads Policing Unit via the police non-emergency 101 number or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
