WHETHER it’s instructing youngsters in the art of sailing on Eccleston Mere, or taking the helm of a yacht skirting the Greek islands, Ken Gutteridge is equally at home.

Seventy-three year-old Ken has been involved with Pilkington Sailing Club since 1969 as an outside member unconnected to the glassmaking company from which the club gets its name.

During that time he has run sail training courses and introduced school pupils and countless beginners to the sport and encouraged young people to experience the many joys of the world of sailing.

Ken’s role as an ambassador for the Club has been rewarded by him being presented with a Lifetime Commitment award from the Royal Yachting Association.

A vice-president, long-serving committee member and former Commodore of Pilkington Sailing Club, Ken, from Prescot Road, was surprised yet delighted to receive the honour.

"I was very honoured when asked to be on the top table," said Ken, who has served on the Club’s general committee for over three decades and was nominated for an award by fellow members.

“I find the youngsters so appreciative when we run taster days."

As Commodore he steered the club through its critical transition from a subsidised social club to a self financing body, organising many fund raising activities and social events which have ensured its survival. A keen club member, willing to undertake any role from clearing up to welcoming newcomers, Ken, with his wife, Hilda, still race competitively at club level and regular pick up trophies with their Enterprise class ‘Paper Plane’.
