Elderly driver dies after being taken ill following crash at junction of St Helens Linkway and Elton head Road

AN elderly man died after being taken ill following a road crash in St Helens, this afternoon, Wednesday, 22 January.
Patrols were called to the roundabout at the junction of St Helens Linkway and Elton Head Road, at around 2.05pm, to reports that a silver Ford Zetec C max had been in collision with a lorry.
Emergency services attended and the driver of the car, believed to be an 86-year-old man, was taken to Whiston Hospital by ambulance but died a short time later.
Collision investigators are now at the scene to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
As a result, the St Helens Linkway is closed from the Micklehead roundabout heading towards St Helens.
There are also restrictions at the Elton Head Road junction with the Linkway with a diversion in place down Sherdley Road.
Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call the Roads Policing Unit via the police non-emergency 101 number or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
