CHARITY PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is offering support for young people feeling less than festive over the New Year period.

In January, the charity nationally receives around a third more calls than at any other time of year.

“Vulnerable young people can feel overcome by pressure to be happy at this time of year, and this can push them further into a dark place of despair,” said PAPYRUS chief executive Ged Flynn.

“They may be acting the life and soul of the party but secretly feeling a mess. Alcohol and recreational drugs can add to existing low mood and cause young people who are at risk of suicide to act impulsively.

“We tend to put our problems on the ‘back burner’ at this time, hoping the break will bring solutions, but if you can’t see a future, nothing is resolved.”

The charity is urging any young people feeling suicidal, or anyone who knows a young person who could be, to seek help.

Open throughout the holidays, the PAPYRUS National helpline can be reached on 0800 068 41 41, or alternatively text 07786 209297 or email pat@papyrus-uk.org.
