A MAN has been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm after a father suffered serious head injuries on New Year's Eve.

Michael Cunliffe from Haydock was found unconscious near the junction with Arrowsmith Road opposite The Jade Garden Chinese takeaway.

The 40-year-old was in a critical condition in hospital after the alleged attack on Church Road, Haydock on Tuesday, December 31.

Karl Hazelden, 28, from Balharry Avenue, Haydock, was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm and appeared at St Helens Magistrates' Court on Saturday morning.

A 17-year-old from Parr has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
