TWO people have been arrested in connection with an assault on New Year’s Eve which left a man in critical condition.

A 17-year-old from Parr and 28-year-old man from Haydock have been questioned by police on suspicion of assault.

The teenager has been released on police bail pending further enquiries while the man continues to be questioned by detectives at a police station in Merseyside.

Police were called to Church Road in Haydock just before midnight after 40-year-old Michael Cunliffe from Haydock was found unconscious near the junction with Arrowsmith Road opposite The Jade Garden Chinese takeaway.

He was taken to hospital to be treated for a serious head injury and his condition remains critical.
