CHURCH bells will ring out on Saturday in celebration of the remarkable life of Steve Prescott.

The eight bells of St Thomas’s Church will be heard between 11am and noon when members of The Lancashire Association of Change Ringers pay tribute to the former Saints player and epic fundraiser.

Steve touched the heart of his hometown and the rugby league community with his heroic efforts for charity during his seven-year battle with pseudomyxoma peritonei, a very rare form of abdominal cancer The father-of-two died at the age of 39 last month, three weeks after undergoing a pioneering multi-visceral transplant it was hoped would extend his life.

He died as a result of graft-versus-host-disease, a complication that can follow a transplant.

On Saturday the Westfield Street church bells will be rung ‘loudly and cheerfully’ in a quarter peal Plain Bob Major method.

One of the bellringers taking part will be Rainhill St Bartholemew’s Tower Captain Bryan McCahey. Bryan told the Star: “There are no bellringers these days at St Thomas’s but we try to ring them around the start of Advent.

“Sadly, we lost Steve last month and we thought it would be nice to dedicate the peal to Steve’s life.

“We felt, given Steve’s appetite for life, it would be fitting to ring loudly and cheerfully. Steve’s wife, Linzi, was delighted when we told her.”

In a notice published in last week’s St Helens Star, the family thanked the support and sympathy shown to them over the past month.

They also thanked everybody who attended the funeral service for giving “Stephen the overwhelming send-off he deserved”.

On Monday night, Steve’s sons Taylor (12) and seven-year-old Koby led out Liverpool FC Under 21s at Langtree Park ahead of the game with Aston Villa.

Taylor is a junior player with the Reds.
