COUNCIL teams are joining forces to break down barriers to try to get more disabled people into work.

They linked up last Tuesday to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities by breaking down barriers faced by many people with a disability – whether because of the physical environment, access to information, education, employment, training, healthcare or transport.

Cabinet Member Cllr Richard McCauley said: “Applying for jobs is a daunting process for anyone, particularly in the current climate.

“But for someone with a disability there can be so many barriers, especially when it comes to developing work-related skills through work placements, volunteering and employment.”

The Supported Employment Service provides an individual approach to supporting disabled people into employment - matching the skills of the individual with specific job roles. It also provides support during employment and helps with job sourcing and applications, CVs, interview support, job coaching and workplace adjustment.

The work of SES has been complemented by the Travel Training Service which helps those with learning disabilities, mental health issues or physical and sensory disabilities to overcome transport barriers to employment and training placements.

The project is open to any St Helens resident aged 16 and over who needs extra support in travelling to training, education and employment. For more details on these schemes please contact St Helens Council Contact Centre on 01744 676789.
