10:00am Friday 25th October 2013 in News
THE Friends of St Helens Cemetery will be hosting guided Military Walking Tours of the cemetery on Remembrance Sunday.
Military expert Jeff Keenan will be leading the tours at St Helens Cemetery, one starting at 10am and the other at 1pm on Sunday November 10.
The tour will include looking at the graves of Victoria Cross recipients, merchant seamen, members of the Royal Navy and anyone involved in the military with an interesting story.
“Many don’t realise where a lot of these local people have been to and what they have been involved in,” said Marlene Downey, deputy chairman at Friends of St Helens Cemetery.
“This year’s tour will cover quite a few different conflicts telling the stories of local people involved, including the Indian Mutiny of 1857, and World War One, with the centenary coming up next year.”
The day will also feature a small exhibition at the Crematorium chapel, which will include videos and displays relating mainly to the First World War.
