Swan killed after being shot 16 times
11:13am Wednesday 16th October 2013 in News
POLICE are hunting a callous thug who killed a swan by shooting it 16 times with an air rifle.
The dead bird was discovered by a member of the public at around 9.30am on Sunday (October 13) in Sankey Valley Park.
The park ranger attended and found the fully grown male swan with multiple airgun pellets. It’s believed that the bird had been killed sometime through the night.
A female swan is also understood to have been injured during the incident and rangers are trying to catch the bird to assess its injuries.
The matter is being investigated by Merseyside Police, RSPCA and the council and patrols have been stepped up in the area.
Merseyside Police’s Wildlife Officer Rachael Krueger said: “We are horrified that anyone could use an airgun to shoot and kill a swan.
“Thankfully incidents such as this are very rare but it is still absolutely appalling to think someone considers this acceptable behaviour and we’re appealing for anyone who knows who may be responsible to contact us.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 3503 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
