9:00pm Thursday 26th September 2013 in News
INVESTIGATORS are awaiting the results of further tests to establish what caused the sudden death of a 13-year-old girl.
Megan Hopwood was found unconscious on Eglington Avenue in Whiston, at around 9.10pm, on Saturday, September 7.
It appeared she had fallen off a child’s push scooter.
Police confirmed the case will remain classed as an “unexplained death” while the investigation continues.
Results of a post mortem are being withheld pending the outcome of further tests ordered by a pathologist.
Police said it could take several weeks for the results of the tests to be known.
Members of the public had frantically flagged down a police car to get help on Saturday and, although the schoolgirl was taken to Whiston Hospital, she could not be saved.
The community of Whiston has been left shocked by the loss of the “bubbly” schoolgirl, described as a “shining star” by her schoolteachers.
A Facebook page dedicated to her memory has attracted almost 5,000 likes and a sea of floral tributes, messages and teddies has built up close to the spot where she collapsed.
Her devastated parents have paid tribute to a daughter who “captured the hearts of everyone she met”.
