Charity Tango sickened as van packed with donations is stolen
THE elderly and victims of domestic abuse will be among those who will be left without furniture for their homes, after thieves stole a charity van.
The self-funded TANGO community project in Haydock provides furniture for some of the most needy and vulnerable, who live in properties that are sparsely decorated.
A van packed with furniture was taken from its base on Park Street, Haydock. The theft followed months of petty vandalism and criminal damage.
TANGO administrator Ann Kerkhoff said: “The van was full of furniture for people who have nothing.
“It has TANGO written on both sides and was kept in a locked compound, but police think it may have been put on a low loader.
“We used to keep it somewhere else, but the window was smashed.”
Ann said that the project had been targeted by mindless louts over several months.
She said: “We have had locks glued, meaning they have had to be replaced. We also created a dog walking area and landscaping, but they trampled over that and knocked down fences.
“But we are not insured to hire another van, so will have to dip into expenses to sort something out.”
A police spokesman confirmed that the van had been stolen and asked for anyone with information to contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
