Delays for bus passengers as Washway Lane closure begins
6:53pm Monday 23rd September 2013 in News
MOTORISTS endured traffic congestion and bus passengers suffered delays on the first day that a major route in and out of the town was closed.
As revealed by the Star earlier this month, a £1.2 million project will build an “underground chamber” at Washway Lane.
The project will take around six months, meaning a 75-metre section will be shut between the BOC Factory and Scafell Road for long periods.
If Monday is anything to go by, it will lead to traffic backlogs, as motorists find alternate routes.
Some bus services were also running up to 20 minutes behind schedule.
United Utilities says the work is necessary to stop untreated wastewater entering Rainford Brook.
The new scheme will see a 10 by four metre underground chamber built below Washway Lane.
When it rains heavily, the tank will hold the wastewater, before screening it and letting it into the brook via a screen, which will catch all the solids.
Washway Lane will be closed from Monday, September 23 to Friday, November 29, when it will be reopened during the Christmas period.
Then, it will close again on Monday, January 7, 2014, until late February/early March.
