The St Helens Star's Jane Ball taken on the Great North Run in her aunt's memory
TWO years ago Jane Ball had hardly run in her life – but a last-minute decision to take part in the St Helens 10k changed all that.
This weekend the mother-of-three is taking part in the Great North Run.
The 35-year-old from Thatto Heath, a senior sales executive at the Star, will be running alongside her cousins and uncle in memory of her aunt June, who died from cancer in 2012. They will be running for Willowbrook Hospice.
She said: “I only signed up for the 10k two days before, but I loved it. I did it in one hour 11 minutes, but the next year I ran it in one hour two minutes.”
Jane, who has been at the Star for 15 years, said her uncle Stephen, 57, and cousins Stephen, 40, and 29-year-old Lyndsey have been training together on a gruelling route from St Helens town centre, to Prescot and back into town.
She said: “If anyone would have told me I would be doing this a couple of years ago I wouldn’t have believed them.
“I don’t know where this has come from. Now I am just hoping to get into the zone on the day. It’s a great feeling after a run and a real sense of achievement. I know there’s the Rainford 10k coming up in October in memory of George Faulkner and I’d recommend to anyone to give it a try.
“You might be taking part in the next Great North Run.”
