PICTURES: Family fun in the open air as Helena Homes' Playstreets is a hit

AFTER growing calls to get the town’s youngsters away from smartphone screens and out into parks and open spaces, a summer games event proved a massive hit.
It saw hundreds of families come together to enjoy traditional sports and crafts at a series of events. The events were part of a new scheme called Playstreets, helping families to spend more quality time together.
The project, supported by Helena Homes’ Make It Happen project, ran 14 events across Thatto Heath, Four Acre, Fingerpost and Parr, thanks to a Big Lottery Fund grant of £460,000.
Neighbourhood co-ordinator Rachel Bennett said: “Parents and younger people were telling us there was not much for children to do in the summer, and so this is all about reclaiming land and making it accessible, so that children can play a wide range of games.”
There are plans to hold events during every school holiday and expand the project to other areas of town.
Rachel added: “The reason this worked so well is because so many local people and organisations volunteered to organise and take part in the fun and games.
“This really is a great example of what can be achieved when residents and organisations work together.”
