10:22am Tuesday 27th August 2013 in News
A MAN will appear in court today charged with a firearms offence after ammunition was seized from hand luggage at John Lennon Airport in Liverpool.
A police investigation – involving officers from the North West counter terrorism unit – began last Thursday evening (August 22) after the discovery was made.
A man was initially arrested at the airport on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.
It led to searches of premises and police enquiries across the region taking place over the past week.
A police spokesman said: “During those searches a hand pistol confirmed as a Section 5 Prohibited Weapon and ammunition was also recovered."
Police later charged Michael Dermot McMahon, 63, of School Lane, Rainhill, with possession of a firearm contrary to Section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968.
Police added: “Premises in the North West area are currently being searched and inquiries will continue over the coming days by officers from Merseyside Police, assisted by the North West Counter Terrorism Unit.
“NWCTU would like to stress there is no threat to anyone in the area or the surrounding communities.”
