International and St Helens artists team up for Art in the Market
12:32pm Friday 23rd August 2013 in News
WORK by more than 40 St Helens-based artists will share an exhibition with images that have been showcased at some of the world’s most famous galleries.
St Mary’s Market in St Helens town centre is the unlikely setting for the exhibition, which is part of a project to give the arts greater local exposure.
From this Saturday, the events area at the indoor market is being transformed into a gallery and stage where exhibitions, music, poetry readings and family friendly art activities will feature.
St Helens-based artists – including Platform, Paint Pots, CHART and Sutton Manor art groups – will show off their work.
And market-goers can also view work by artists who have previously exhibited at Tate and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The Changing Faces exhibition, including portraits kindly loaned by the Flowers Gallery London, has been organised by St Helens-based artist Stephen Brown.
Support from Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places funding through Heart of Glass has made it possible to bring artists of this calibre to the town centre.
Shoppers can try various activities with the help of artists.
The event runs Monday to Saturday for two weeks between Saturday, August 24 and Saturday, September 7, except Bank Holiday Monday.
Doors open at 10am and close at 4pm.
