HE’S the TV presenter known for pursuing adventures such as swimming away from Alcatraz and climbing the world’s tallest trees in California.
But just how did Ben Fogle respond to the more down to earth challenges set when he made a special visit to Langtree Park?
Fogle, star of BBC’s Lonely Planet’s Year of Adventures, is an ambassador for tea firm Typhoo and headed to Saints to mark the Wirral-based company’s renewal of a sponsorship deal.
Knowing the explorer’s passion for adventure, Saints chiefs wanted to cause more of a stir than a standard promotional photo call.
And with the lads up at Saints – particularly skipper Paul Wellens and Jon Wilkin - known to be fond of a good brew – they warmed up with a sport of tea tasting. Gate crashing the ‘tea party’ was the Star’s Mike Critchley, himself a frequent sampler of the liquid refreshment.
But then came the main event – with Fogle joining Saints players past and present for the ‘crossbar challenge’ on the Langtree Park.
With ex-Saints goalkickers Paul Sculthorpe and Tommy Martyn offering guidance, the guests took aim at landing the ball on the bar that sits between the uprights.
Wilkin showed he had the weight of kick to make sure it was mission accomplished by plonking his effort right on the money.
But it proved a step too far for the adventurer, a novice when it comes to putting boot to ball, although with a little more coaching from Scully and Tommy we’re sure Saints’ new fan will get there.
