Sweet success for baker Jan
BRITAIN’S gone baking mad this summer and along with the popularity of shows like the Great British Bake Off, comes a sweet slice of success.
Rainhill-based cake decorator Jan Galloway has seen a massive rise in attendance at her tutoring classes, so much so that she has added extra sessions to meet the demand.
Jan, 67, started teaching cake decoration after leaving her job as a laboratory technician at Rainhill High School.
After experimenting with catering for events as a side job, Jan eventually took the risk of leaving her school days behind her and taking the tutoring business full-time.
The mother-of-two spends most of her week teaching classes for beginners to advanced decorators at venues in St Helens and neighbouring towns.
While the popularity of home baking could be the result of Britain’s tightening purse strings, Jan believes that true satisfaction comes from a little hard work.
Jan said: “Of course you can pay someone to decorate a wedding or birthday cake for you, but there is just no substitute for the satisfaction you get from doing it yourself.
“I take incredible pride in leading my students through all the intricate and artistic processes to help them to decorate cakes as good as a professional.”
Jan believes her 12-week courses help her students achieve a level of decorative skill that can rival that of professional baker.
Her cakes have featured on the likes of This Morning and the BBC’s Bank Of Mum And Dad.
