Council: Festival gave boost to St Helens town centre

HUNDREDS more people are believed to have visited town centre shops thanks to a summer entertainment spectacular which saw dragons rub shoulders with puppets, singers and stilt walking Indian princes.
Photographers Mike Boden and Ian Park were out and about over the three day Summer Streets event, which proved to be a huge success.
Gary Maddock, events and marketing officer at St Helens Council said: “We were really pleased with the outcome, especially the amount of people that attended.
“We have been in touch with the retailers (in the town centre) and they were happy in terms of bringing more people in and keeping them here longer.
“We are hopeful that it will have an impact on the local economy.
“The performers were superb, including JP the puppeteer, who went on to appear at the Edinburgh Festival. The kids were running out of Waterfields with their pasties to watch him. And next year we hope to make it bigger and better.”
