Bereaved bride stages fundraiser at Bull and Dog
WHEN Dave Westhead was diagnosed with terminal cancer in November last year, he and partner Joanna vowed to make the most of the time they had left together.
The severity of his condition, cancer of the oesophagus, meant doctors could not estimate how long that would be, but Joanna and Dave were adamant they would finally get married after 12 years together.
Although Dave lost his battle shortly after the couple were married, the support Joanna received from Macmillan Cancer Support nurses and Willowbrook Hospice has inspired her to organise a family fun day on what would have been Dave’s 50th birthday, this Saturday August 10.
Joanna, 38, from Sutton Manor, said: “We’d always said we would tie the knot but we kept putting it off. After Dave’s diagnosis, we just got the ball rolling and thought there’s no time to keep delaying it.”
While Dave continued to undergo treatment, everything from flowers to cars were being organised for the big day and the couple were married at St Helens Register Office on December 28 Sadly four days later, on January 1, Dave passed away. Mum-of-two Joanna, added: “If it hadn’t been for the support of everyone, I don’t know what I’d have done. I can’t thank everyone enough.”
Dave, an HGV driver, was dad to 11-year-old Daniel, and 18-year-old step-son Paul, and Macmillan has continued to support them and Joanna.
Joanna added: “The Macmillan nurse we were assigned has been incredible. It’s such an amazing charity and I can’t believe all the support we’ve had through the whole process.
“Our nurse still comes to see me and the boys to see how we are coping. It’s really been amazing support and that’s why I am organising the fundraising day for the charity.”
The day is being held at the Bull & Dog, Clock Face Road and starts at noon.
Joanna added: “The Bull & Dog have been really helpful in organising the event and hopefully it will be the first of many. I want to raise as much money as I can for the amazing charity in Dave’s memory.”
