A MAN from St Helens was arrested after trouble flared in Leigh town centre on Saturday during an anti-immigration demonstration.
A 70-strong group North West Infidels (NWI) which had called a demonstration in the centre of Leigh clashed with about 40 supporters of the Unite Against Facism movement.
The NWI marchers gathered in front of Leigh Town Hall where one of them tried to snatch a UAF banner declaring "NWI NOT WELCOME."
Police were out in force and one man was arrested.
Paul Carpenter, aged 31, of Warwick Street, St Helens was charged with a public order offence and assaulting a police officer.
He will appear before Wigan and Leigh magistrates on August 16.
