NEIGHBOURS feared a blaze at an empty bungalow would spread after smoke engulfed their homes.
Arsonists are believed to have torched the property off Clock Face Road on Monday evening.
Worried neighbours who contacted the Star say the vacant bungalow is on land where a there are plans to create an Aldi supermarket.
A mother-of-two told the Star: “There was smoke pouring into our homes. There were two fire engines there and the firefighters told us they were concerned it may spread.
“It was a frightening experience, certainly for my little boy, who is aged six, and other parents and children.
“It is just out and out vandalism – there are always people hanging around there. That site needs clearing up and developing as soon as possible."
Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service confirmed two engines were called out shortly before 7.30pm on Monday, March 18 and spent an hour and a half at the property.
A spokeswoman said: “It is being treated as a suspected deliberate ignition.”
