RUGBY player Zoe Halsall has come up with a real ‘heartwarmer’ of a story to help the town’s older people.

The eight-year-old Pilkington Recs junior and team-mates have been backing a winter warmth campaign run by team sponsor Age UK.

Recs’ junior managers gave bobble pin badges for players to sell to family, friends and school mates.

And Zoe, a Rivington Primary School pupil, proved the star performer as she sold more than 100 of them for the charity, which is based at Mansion House, Victoria Park.

Kelly Traverse, team manager of Recs under eights, said: “She raised £108 selling the badges which was a fantastic result.”

Age UK mid Mersey were so impressed they awarded Zoe with prize of young volunteer of the year.

Kelly added: “We are looking at building links between young and old to forge strong community links.

“This could include identifying older volunteers for our club and possibly young volunteers who could get involved with Age UK.”
