St Helens town centre to host continental market

TRADERS from across Europe will arrive in St Helens this week as Church Square welcomes a continental market (Thursday, March 14 to Saturday, March 16).

Stalls will be selling foods such as sun-ripened Italian olives, authentic Spanish paella, biscuits from Brittany and German sausages fresh from the grill.

There will also be a range of ornaments and clothing on sale.

St Helens Council, which organises the event, hopes it will attract more shoppers to the town centre.

I agree they are everywhere now and this is no big deal. They are very pricey

anyway I thought everyone in St. Helens was on the verge of starvation and ate at foodbanks because of the savage cuts the coalition is making ?

Amazes me how British people visit a Continental Market yet when they go abroad for a holiday they want Fish & Chips all day and English breakfast in the morning.

Amazing that Frankie, that you know what every single holiday maker has to eat abroad , do you go along with them or did you conduct a survey haha !
I agree I quite like these markets , but they are very pricey. I guess they have to be dear to cover the costs of the pitch?

Amazing you may think but as a retired driver who drove to Spain on a weekly basis I made more money supplying the holiday trade between Llorett and Salou with large quantities of HP Sauce, Tomato Ketchup, PG Tea Bags, Mint Sauce, Bacon & Sausages and all sorts of other English Delights, for every £1.00 I spent in the cash and carry I received £2.00 in return and my customer was then selling it on at a profit, sadly on my return journey the only thing I was ever asked to bring back to England was Cheap Cigs and booze which as a non smoker and non drinker I did not bring I was never asked for any of the delights that appear for sale in the Continental Market, on balance I think my first comment is how it is.

Another kick in the stalls for the regular traders in the Market. Sitting there watching the visiting market traders cocking a snook at the health and hygiene regulations, saving a wad in rent and taking their trade....

Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, Portugal anywhere there was a ex pat community or holiday area there were people who wanted products from home, all Coach and Truck Drivers did it as a nice little sideline taking stuff over, I did my job for forty years to all the above countries and I still have contact with some of the people I supplied.

5 sheds and a merry go round hardly counts as a continental market, most of the food they sell is available in any supermarket for half the price and you can buy a scarf and wooly hat on the market.

Are you using your own brain or are you running one in for an idiot, but in answer to your question I personally eat local wherever I am, but just to please you I will rephrase my original message,

Amazes me how British people visit a Continental Market yet when they go abroad for a holiday most of them want Fish & Chips all day and English breakfast in the morning.

Happy now.
