Update: Man threatening to jump off bridge on St Helens Linkway causes traffic chaos

DRIVERS faced huge tailbacks after a man threatened to jump off a bridge.
Police were called to St Helens Linkway this afternoon following reports that a man in his 20s was threatening to kill himself. Emergency services attended at around 3.50pm following a number of calls from concerned members of the public.
A section of the road, between Elton Head road and Sherdley Road was closed as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the man and the public.
A police officer at the scene began talking to the man and just after 4.30pm, he was persuaded to come down from the bridge.
He has since been taken to hospital for assessment.
The road is now open.
