Merseyside Police will lead Blindfoot Road crash investigation

MERSEYSIDE Police has confirmed it will handle the investigation into a road accident which left a 20-year-old man in serious condition.

A Volvo had been seen speeding along Blindfoot Road in Rainford, by officers out on patrol in the early hours of Wednesday, March 6.

A short time later they discovered the same car in a field and a man lying nearby with serious head injuries.

Initially, because officers had witnessed the car being driven at high speed earlier, the force voluntarily referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

However, after it was ruled police had not been in pursuit of the car, the investigation was returned to the Merseyside force.

A statement read: “Merseyside Police can confirm that the IPCC has now referred this matter back to Merseyside Police so that a local investigation can be carried out.

“As the investigation is ongoing, it is inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

Officers had provided first aid and contacted paramedics after finding the man. He was taken to Fazakerley Hospital, where he is being treated for serious head injuries.

An area of Mossborough Road close to Blindfoot Road was closed for several hours, while a detailed search of the area was carried out with help from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
