Amateur footballer could face jail over GBH attack

AN amateur footballer has been warned he could face jail after he admitted fracturing an opponent’s cheek bone and eye socket during a game.

Michael Smith was playing for Vulcan football club on April 12 last year when he injured Andrew Jevons, who was in the Windle Labour Club Reserves team.

Mr Jevons suffered facial injuries during the fixture in Mesnes Park, Newton-le-Willows.

After Smith, of Catherine Way, Newton-le-Willows, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm, Judge Stephen Clarke further remanded him on bail to await sentence on March 22.
