Rimmer: Council cuts and welfare reforms a 'devastating combination'

Marie Rimmer Marie Rimmer

THE leader of St Helens Council accused the Government of launching an “attack on families” as she predicted a devastating combination of cuts in council funding and welfare would plunge thousands more local families into poverty.

Marie Rimmer likened the Coalition’s austerity measures to “social engineering” as she echoed warnings from other council leaders in the North about the threats faced to ordinary families this year.

She told the Star that “with every single council service – from libraries to street sweeping - under review” it was inevitable that the public would witness significant changes in services.

As previously reported by the Star, Sutton pool has already been mothballed to save money and there are proposals to reduce library opening hours.

And - after a workforce has been depleted by more than 1,000, possibly another 200 because of further redundancies - more departments will suffer.

Councillor Rimmer fears further woe will come from changes to council tax and housing benefits that will hit working families in some of St Helens’ poorest communities. She said national media portrayals that welfare cuts would simply hit the “workshy” were a manipulative move by the government to create divisions in society. Instead, she insisted that thousands of St Helens families, already reeling from rising costs of living and wage freezes, would bear the brunt of reductions in benefits.

She said: “We will have to review every single service that the council provides. I want to explain that it’s not just council funds that are concerning me. We will have lost £50million over four years and this year we will see the localisation of the council tax and changes to housing benefit.

“That is just a mechanism of making central government cuts and getting local government to do it. They are cutting the finance to people who need it. It equates to a 15 per cent cut that is falling on working age families.

“Every working age family will have to pay 20 per cent (towards council tax) and so that affects people not paying anything now.”

She added that 3,000 families in Helena Partnerships accommodation alone will be hit by housing benefit changes as part of the so called “bedroom tax”, which will affect people with spare rooms.

She added: “Some of them will be losing up to £24 a week, some £11.50, and there is nothing we can do about that. This is social engineering. They are trying to turn people on each other.

“The council workforce has dropped from 8,299 to 7,328 – that is an 11.7 per cent reduction. In that time the council was the biggest employer in the borough.

“You can only imagine what the public reaction would have been had a major company in the town been allowed to do this.

“And there is more as we are reviewing every single service to find this remaining £12million.

“There have been people made redundant and there will be more – we cannot do this without it.

“There will be some reductions in delivery and location of services. For example we are reviewing libraries – even the way we sweep the streets will be looked at.

“What we are aiming for is to try and keep services as local as we can – but there may be some reductions in hours of service.”

How much do the four page pull out and internet pop up adds on this site and paper cost?
How much does the glossy magazine cost?
Why do Rainhill and Eccleston park never get any services despite the high amount of tax they pay?
Why does Parr pool get upgrades yet Sutton closed?
How was there money to buy 100 Apple mac computers and now we have to cut library hours?
Why did only certain libraries get them instead of them being evenly distributed between them all?
Why was no planning put in place for the cuts even though they knew they were coming?
Why are the job cuts always at the bottom and never the top?
All this and more will not be answered in next weeks addition of... Rimmer soap.

Taking the simple step of reviewing the executive pay in the council would save at least £1m a year adding the indirect costs of employment to the base salaries.

No this wont solve the problem of funding of services but its a £1m extra to spend on the public of st helens.

But will this far left socialist leader countenance that ?

What do you think?

The people of St Helens always come last to protecting their own coseted positions (and cronies) and political capital.

Its a disgrace and people are sick to the back teeth of it.

Sankey, you have less chance of finding a socialist on St. Helens Council than you have of playing for Manchester United. The Labour Party eradicated socialism from its agenda back in the 1990s.

Right wing , left wing, centre forward ,full back. What is wrong with common sense.Do what they say they are going to do. People don't need to follow ideologys that went away a long time ago, that is the way to run organisations, sorting out the greedy ones gradually, then we will see how things really should be

If the council leaders put the same amount of energy into moaning and blaming the Government we would have solved this crisis!

The welfare reforms are needed as we simply can't keep borrowing more money. The so called "Bedroom Tax" is in principle a good idea, the idea of benefits is to put a roof over peoples head not to live in large homes whilst those not eligible, have to save to buy bigger homes. Granted those that have a spare room for carers etc should be subject to some sort of mitigation but apart from that its time to pay up or move out.

As for the state of the roads, when will Eccleston/Windle see some resurfacing as the roads are a disgrace!

Jumper, you should pay more attention. I mentioned the spending on the town hall some months ago in fact almost a year when they put the brand new carpet in the Foyer.
The usual blame against Marie when the real culprit are Government cuts but that is aprt of Tory divide and rule policy with the answer being to decimate the public sector and nullify any employment rights by a £500 up front payment for access to a tribunal, affordable by the rich but with someone made redundant money that could be spent on food and family.

If Tories ever got around to their wish to abolish the European Court of Human Rights by the smokescreen they can't get rid of Mohammed, (on which no other country has a problem), then the workers will be really at the mercy of employers.

Oh dear cue Sankey!!??

Look forward to labour reversing the government cuts when they get in power in 2015 bill. Pigs can fly.

I presume you would like to increase the public sector dramatically ?

No but get rid of this evil Government. Just had an e-mail where local shop workers are likely to be made redundant with probably no payment and, if re-engaged, on worse contracts and less pay. Another job loss that will make you happy.
I do hope my party reverses all the privatisation and starts spending on housing and infrastructure creating jobs. Now that is a novelty!!

The roads are in poor condition throughout the borough and Windle doesn't seem as bad to me as other areas on my daily travels.

There has been quite a bit of resurfacing work done around the Kiln Ln/Coronation Rd area in the last year or so - trouble is it's of very poor quality and is already forming potholes.

Never mind though - they've just spent what must have been a fair sum planting some more trees down Broadway. Very nice.

Do you know how many children are born with deformities in Fallujhah?
Do you know the amount of dead civilians in Afghanistan alone?
Do you know the death toll of soldiers in Iraq.
If this government is evil because a few people have lost some benefits , then I'll take them over warmonger (sorry ILLEGAL INVASION) Liebour.
Jesus Bill , talk about pot kettle and black !
