Mossborough Road closed in Rainford near East Lancs after early morning accident
A 20-YEAR-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after a speeding car left a country road and smashed through a fence overnight.
Police officers on patrol noticed a Volvo being driven at speed on Blindfoot Road, Rainford at about 1am on Wednesday (March 6).
They found the car had landed in a field and discovered the man nearby with serious head injuries.
Officers provided first aid and contacted paramedics.
He was taken to Fazakerley Hospital, where on Wednesday morning his condition was described as serious. His next of kin have been contacted.
A stretch of Mossborough Road leading to Blindfoot Road was closed for several hours, while a search of the area was carried out with help from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
Merseyside Police said officers had spotted the car but were not in pursuit of it. Nevertheless, the incident will require an independent investigation.
A statement read: “As the vehicle had been sighted by the police patrol car just prior to the collision Merseyside Police will be making a referral to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”
Police are appealing for anyone who witnesses the incident to contact them on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
