Saints Girls marching out in style

A GIRLS rugby squad which had been turning out for their fixtures in a makeshift strip, will now be suitably ‘kitted out’ next time they run out onto the pitch.

St Helens Girls Rugby League Team had been playing in unsold 2011 replica jerseys from Saints merchandise.

But these shirts were never intended for the rough and tumble of the hard-tackling game and as a result ripped easily.

To try and help drum up the cash for a new strip, many parents became volunteers at the club to assist with fundraising for the girls.

Even though a recent racenight fundraiser raised £1,000 for the girls; this still did not put enough cash in the kitty to provide a new kit.

That’s when, the girls got in touch with St Helens Rotary Club, asking for a donation towards the new kits.

This weekend the team received a visit from Celia Parr, President Elect of the St Helens Rotary Club, and her colleagues.

After meeting the coaching staff, parents and team, Celia presented a donation of £250 to Head Coach Geoff Alford.

Celia Parr said: “It is a privilege to be able to help fund a club filled with enthusiasm, dedication and friendship”.

The girls now have enough money to be able to buy a new kit in time for the new season.

A spokeswoman for the team todl the Star: “We want to say a huge thank you to the Rotary club for their generous donation from everyone at St.Helens Girls Rugby League Team.”
