THE consultation period for people to register their views over the possible return to the town’s old Latin motto, ends tomorrow (Friday, February 22).

The debate was sparked following the prominent role the motto Ex Terra Lucem played in the spectacular opening ceremony of the Olympics.

Rainhill writer Frank Cottrell Boyce, who wrote the ceremony, admitted that the old motto was a significant influence and was particularly relevant to the Olympic cauldron.

Meaning Out of the Earth Light, it was established in 1876 to reflect the importance of glass and coal to the town.

However in 1974, it was replaced with Prosperitas in Excelsis (Flourishing Well), which critics say, is uninspiring and dull.

You can still have your say at applications.

I will be delighted to welcome back the original brilliant Latin motto for St Helens - I say this as a Latinist but more importantly as a son of these parts!
