NEWS that St Helens town centre is to have its third McDonald’s restaurant has divided opinion among some Star readers.

While there were no formal objections to the planning application, many online pointed to new investment and jobs coming to the town, but some suggest it’s one fast food restaurant too many.

Commenting on the Star’s website anthonywilson wrote: “Perhaps instead of consulting on changing the town’s motto from Prosperitas in Excelsis back to Ex Terra Lucem it should be changed to "A Big Mac and Large Fries".

Mr Benggo added: “If the choice is an empty space, doing no one any good, or a fast food restaurant providing jobs even if they are part time, the choice will be a fast food restaurant every time.”

The new drive-thru will be built on the site of the old Tesco petrol station on Chalon Way, next to the Range. It is expected to provide at least 65 jobs, full and part-time.

Tjeurouk added: “I love a quarter pounder with cheese as much as the next person, but know the importance of a balanced diet too. However I do agree with someone else’s comment about it being built next to a college of around 10,000 students.”

A McDonald’s spokesperson responded: “Our decision to build a new restaurant in St Helens is based on our assessment of customer demand and that a new restaurant will not have a significant impact on our existing restaurants in the area.”
