HMV worker: Atmosphere horrible after closure news
1:23pm Wednesday 13th February 2013 in News
Closing down sale notices were delivered to HMV within hours of the news breaking.
DISILLUSIONED staff at HMV met news of the store’s imminent closure with disappointment, tinged with a sense of relief, said one employee.
The St Helens store, based in Church Square Shopping Centre store, is one of 66 across the UK that will close within the next six weeks.
Ten jobs will be axed locally.
One staff member, who has asked not to be named, said: “It’s horrible at the moment because no one wants to be there. Morale is very low.
“We were told at 9am and by ten all the graphics saying we were closing, arrived and we had to put them up.
“Some people have been here 10 years, as long as it’s been in the town, but they don’t want to find another job right away in case it affects their redundancy.
“Some shoppers are coming in just because we are closing and one said ‘now you will have to get a decent job’. It’s not what you want to hear.”
The staff member added: “The shop’s closure will have an effect on that part of town. A lot of people come here just for HMV. Perhaps the rent is really expensive and that’s part of the problem.”
The cull of stores has seen one remain in Northern Ireland and none in Edinburgh, and has claimed the store on Market Street in Manchester.
