A BENEFITS cheat has received a suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to fraudulently claiming more than £12,000.

Katherine Bailie, 31, of Milton Street, Sutton Manor, admitted eight offences, which she knew would affect her housing and council tax benefit.

She had failed to tell St Helens Council’s benefits department that her employed partner was living with her.

It meant she was overpaid £12,378 in benefits to which she wasn’t entitled.

Appearing before magistrates in St Helens, she was sentenced to six weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to complete 200 hours unpaid work. Bailie must also pay £75 towards legal costs and pay back the full amount.
