A NUMBER of properties had to be evacuated when an electrical fire broke out in a manhole, causing widespread disruption.

Firefighters were called out just after 3pm to College Street in the town centre outside St Helens Police Station.

The fire has since been put out and firefighters called in engineers from Scottish Power, who isolated the electricity supply, meaning the traffic lights on College Street were out for a period. The road is now open.

Nobody is believed to have been injured in the fire.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue crew manager Christopher Allan, from Parr Stocks Fire Station, said: “Our fire crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire. The partnership work with other agencies brought the incident to a safe conclusion.”
