Supermarket chain unveils plans for new store Supermarket chain unveils plans for new store

SUPERMARKET chain Aldi has submitted plans to build another store in St Helens, which would create up to 30 new jobs.

Under the proposals the run down Clock Face shopping parade, off Clock Face Road, would be demolished and replaced by the new store and 124-space car park.

The site currently includes a car wash and a number of disused retail units.

The planning application presented to St Helens Council states that up to 25-30 jobs would be created and that the development would seek to enhance the appearance of the area.

Whilst that site badly needs clearing and tidying up, do we really need yet another supermarket in St Helens? The existing Aldi is only a five minutes car journey from where they are proposing to build another store on the Clock Face Road site. ASDA expressed an interest in developing that site a few months back. It will be interesting to know the reasons why their plans did not go ahead.

Really? Whether its another supermarket or not It needs redeveloping, end of, regardless of who does it I see no downside to it at all, creates jobs wen it built and creates jobs whilst being built and creates jobs to knock it all down, and will enhance the area, win win win win if you ask me

If you ask most people whether they think St Helens needs another ALDI supermarket the answer is an emphatic NO There's two stores in the Borough already and St Helens is at Supermarket saturation point.
It won't necessarily create any new jobs anyway until the overall St Helens economy picks up (that's years away if it happens at all). People shop in one supermarket at the expense of another. The new Tesco originally took additional people on and then the reverse happened as staff were laid off as demand is lower than was expected probably due to the change of store location and a declining local economy with people shopping for cheaper supermarket goods elsewhere. ALDI might well be the only winners in this as people choose to shop for cheaper more affordable goods but it will come at a price for existing supermarkets profitability and those who work in them.
