St Helens man butted and bit police

A MAN who attacked two police officers, leaving one with a nasty bite wound, has avoided a jail sentence.

Steven McLoughlin, from Stockton Grove in Nutgrove pleaded guilty to assaulting two officers on December 9.

Prosecutor Angela Blackmore explained that McLoughlin had been drinking on the day in question and had returned to his parents’ house.

Police were called after the 25-year-old became aggresive after starting an argument with them.

She said: “The officers were met by him in the doorway, when he asked them what they wanted.

“They attempted to calm him down, but he remained aggressive. His parents were distressed and beckoned the officers inside.

“As they attempted to enter he stepped in front of them and raised his hands. One of the officers grabbed hold of his wrists and both attempted to restrain him.

“A constable was headbutted to the left hand side of his face.”

As they collapsed in a heap on the floor McLoughlin then bit one of the officers on the biceps.

They were unable to restrain him so back up was called.

Sentencing him to four months in jail, suspended for 18 months, magistrates ordered him to pay the two officers £200 each and carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.

Disgraceful. A police officer goes to work and through no fault of his own is badly bitten by a thug who then escapes jail? Wonder if it would be different if he had bitten a politician or a councillor??
