Snow flurries have stopped. However, it is more than 10cm deep in some places.
Weather forecasts are that the temperatures will rise during the early hours, bringing the possibilty of heavy rain.
The Met Office has issued a warning for ice.
Driving conditions are treacherous and vehicles have been abandoned overnight in some parts of the town.
Public transport operators will issue bulletins early in the morning over whether there is service disruption.

All Arriva bus services have stopped after road conditions became too dangerous to operate.

Up to 10cm of snow has fallen across St Helens tonight after a blizzard started at about 8pm. There have been reports of drivers becoming stranded in deep snow.
