THE Met Office has issued an early amber warning of heavy snow for St Helens  on Friday.

Forecasters believe that an area of snow seems likely to spread from the South West of the UK moving up to the North West by Friday morning.

Winds will strengthen and blizzard conditions are likely in places, especially over higher ground.

Accumulations of more than 10-15 cm of snow could well occur quite widely.

The Met Office warns there is the potential for some severe disruption to travel and advises the public to watch for updates on this warning.
