FIREFIGHTERS freed two women from different cars after a crash involving three vehicles on the East Lancashire Road during rush hour.

The incident happened on the eastbound section of the dual carriageway between A58 Liverpool Road and Haydock Lane, shortly before 5.30pm on Monday.

A green Volkswagen Scirocco, a silver Fiat 500 Lounge and a silver Ford Mondeo, were involved in the crash on the Manchester bound carriageway.

Witnesses of the aftermath reported seeing crumpled wreckage of two cars.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the roof of one vehicle to help paramedics move a 42-year-old woman on a spinal board.

Fire crews also helped move a 46-year-old woman from another car to a hospital.

Both were taken to Whiston Hospital, however, a police spokeswoman said their injuries were not believed to be serious.

The crash caused a section of the East Lancashire Road to be closed for about an hour and a half.

Traffic congestion stretched back to Carr Mill.
