MOTORISTS and pedestrians are being warned of icy stretches on roads and pavements arond St Helens this morning.

With temperatures dipping well below zero overnight, people are being advised to go carefully on untreated surfaces after yesterday's heavy rainfall froze.

Weather forecasters predict a bright, dry but bitterly cold Tuesday, with a daytime maximum barely reaching any higher than 1.

For tonight, temperatures in St Helens will drop to around -3, but will feel more like -6 with the wind chill added.
