Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy
POET Laureate Carol Ann Duffy is offering pupils from St Helens the chance to see their work published in a national anthology.
Carol Ann Duffy, who visited the town in 2011 to give a reading of her poetry at St Helens Central Library, is launching an event this month aimed at children who do not have English as their first language and those learning a second language at school.
Being unveiled at Manchester Metropolitan University on January 30, the project is entitled Mother Tongue, Other Tongue.
Children can write about what a lullaby, poem or song in their native language means to them, or compose an original poem in a second language they are learning at school.
It is open to pupils aged eight to 18, and schools interested in taking part should contact Claudia Conerney on mtot@mmu.ac.uk. Closing date for entries is June 30.
