Portrait bench will celebrate St Helens icons Johnny Vegas and Steve Prescott

Steve Prescott Steve Prescott

A PORTRAIT bench that will celebrate St Helens icons Steve Prescott and Johnny Vegas will be created in a park.

St Helens Council has approved plans for the bench, which will include silhouetted artworks of Prescott, the highly respected endurance athlete and fundraiser, and Vegas, who is continuing a successful career in comedy, radio and television.

The creation, to be located at the Score in Sherdley Park, will also include a glassblower to mark the town’s industrial heritage.

Why do you lot always moan and take the negative road whenever somebody tries to get something positive for St Helens? If we gave in to all the Vandals, Drug Abusers, Alcoholics etc then nothing would happen.

I moan because the council says there is no money to keep leisure centres such as Sutton open - and then spend money on a park bench so simple people like you two can be amused and go and vote for them. Soylent green.

Vegas , an icon, you must be joking. ! ! !. All for himself, now Prekky is worth one, but not in a place like the park out in the open, stick it in town for better security

It's a seat for sticking your backside on... has it come to this that the provision of a seat is seen as ' positive " ?

Plenty of seats near Maries Palice i/e The Town hall. On that note, you never see much litter/graffiti near those seats, but of course Queen Marie can see whats going on there from her ivory tower overlooking her subjects, either visiting the library or the court

It’s what’s on the seat that’s positive. It’s who and what represent this town. It doesn’t matter where and what it’s on, it’s just someone trying to do something different and contemporary. I think it should be applauded, not ridiculed and decried by people not willing to stick their head above the parapet.

Or people who think the money could be better used? It's easy to see why they remain in power.

The council could nip to tesco and spend this money on food for the food bank - there would still be other benches.

Actually, it does not say that The Council are funding the benches - it just says The Council have approved the plan.

I thought about that Susan - so maybe they aren't - but it doesn't say they are not funding it either. Makes you laugh though that they say there is no money - and yet we can make a bench. If the council or whoever is doing this want to help out maybe they could donate the money to a food bank instead.
