A FRIENDLY charity squad has made a wish come true for children at a short break unit.

Helen Marie Friends Charity has donated £7,062 to Abbeyford, where money will be used to buy iPads, iPods, TVs, interactive technology, cycles and go-karts.

The Helen Marie children’s charity, based in St Helens, was established in 1985 after schoolgirl Helen Marie Hurst’s life was cut short by a terminal illness.

The charity was set up in memory of the 12-year-old.

Ever since, Helen Marie’s parents, Marjorie and Arthur Hurst, with family and friends, have worked to try and alleviate the suffering of children during times of illness.

In the past year the charity, which raises money for children in St Helens, has handed out more than £12,000 to help improve the lives of disabled children.

It has raised thousands of pounds through events including sponsored walks to barn dances, fashion shows and Christmas fairs.

This year the Bridge Centre, Lansbury Avenue, and Abbeyford have benefited from donations.

The Bridge Centre provides support for children with disabilities and their families, and Abbeyford provides care for children aged seven to 18 with severe learning difficulties.
