THIRTEEN jobs have been lost at St Helens’ Comet store after administrators of the electrical goods retailer failed to secure a rescue deal.

The national chain slid into financial trouble last month – and though there had been rumours of potential rescue packages – nothing materialised.

Administrators Deloitte confirmed the local job losses, adding that the King Street store had included a mix of full and part time roles.

It has set up a series of support measures to help redundant workers find new employment, including establishing contact with more than 35 prospective employers and setting up a LinkedIn network through which companies are advertising positions.

Deloitte said that despite significant efforts to find a buyer, it had been forced to close stores nationwide.

Chris Farrington, joint administrator of the company, said: “Although we had discussions with a number of interested parties, the substantial working capital requirements to fund the business was a significant concern for these parties and was a key factor in preventing a deal being reached.

“We will now consider the options with regards other assets of the company, including the brand and website.

“We wish to express our gratitude for the professionalism and dedication of all employees across the store network.”

A website – www.cometjobs.co.uk – will go live shortly with details of vacancies at prospective employers, employment fairs and advice.

With the Church Street’s Curry’s having closed earlier this year, it leaves the centre of St Helens without a major electrical goods store.

Curry’s megastore on Ravenhead Retail Park does remain, however.
