A COUNCILLOR whose son was assaulted by Brian Spencer says the former St Helens Liberal Democrat leader’s aggression at the election count was totally unacceptable.
Speaking outside the court Cllr Anthony Johnson, father of Mark, said: “By pleading guilty he’s admitted he’s in the wrong. But I didn’t step in front of him. I stepped out of his way.
“I could see he was upset. I have lost elections , but to respond with violence is taking it a bit far. It lets down what was a long political career.”
After being handed a fine and criminal conviction, Brian Spencer (right) said: “It’s a relief to get it over. I want to get back working in the community which is all I have ever wanted to do. I’m not out of politics. I am still working in the community.
“This was not a reaction to losing my seat. I admitted to pushing him, but not his mother.”
